Peter Jackson’s plans to bring audiences back to Middle-earth have encountered an unexpected controversy, and fans are questioning whether another Lord of the Rings movie is necessary.

Warner Bros. has spent years developing new projects connected to J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy Addresses the Situation

During an appearance at Spain’s Sitges Film Festival, Jackson discussed the future of several upcoming projects while accepting the festival’s honorary grand prize.

According to IGN, the filmmaker confirmed that The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past remains in the screenwriting stage.

His comments indicate that the project hasn’t been abandoned despite speculation surrounding Warner Bros.’ restructuring.

However, Jackson didn’t announce a production start date, confirm casting details, or reveal when the movie might arrive in theaters.

    That distinction is important.

Although the screenplay remains in development, the movie hasn’t received a publicly announced filming schedule. Corporate decisions could still influence when production moves forward.

Nevertheless, Jackson’s remarks offer the clearest indication yet that Warner Bros. hasn’t canceled the project.

And the story being developed could take the franchise somewhere audiences haven’t seen before.

Lord of The Rings Is Getting an Unexpected Addition

Unlike previous Middle-earth movies, Shadow of the Past will revisit events surrounding the original trilogy while introducing a storyline set years afterward.

Stephen Colbert, a longtime Tolkien enthusiast, is developing the screenplay alongside his son, Peter McGee, and original trilogy screenwriter Philippa Boyens.

The project draws inspiration from six chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring that Jackson largely omitted from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001).

These chapters contain adventures and encounters that never appeared in the theatrical adaptation.

However, the movie won’t simply recreate those missing scenes.

Instead, the story takes place 14 years after Frodo’s passing, following Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace the beginning of their original journey.

Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, discovers a mysterious secret connected to how the War of the Ring nearly ended differently.

The filmmakers intend to connect these two timelines, potentially revealing previously unexplored details about the original adventure.

But that creative direction has already generated criticism.

Fans Aren’t Exactly Celebrating the Announcement

Despite Jackson’s involvement, some fans have expressed frustration with Warner Bros.’ decision to revisit the original trilogy.

“Nobody wants to watch a movie about Sam’s daughter,” one fan wrote.

Another questioned why the studio isn’t exploring other Tolkien stories instead.

“Personally, I’m tired of all this already. I think they should set aside the trilogy by now and think about adapting other kinds of stories from other books by Tolkien.”

Others believe The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) already delivered the perfect conclusion.

“Why? It’s a great trilogy with a great bittersweet end. There’s no need to add anything,” another viewer argued.

The criticism reflects concerns that Hollywood continues expanding beloved franchises long after their original stories have concluded.

While these comments don’t represent every fan, they demonstrate that Jackson and Warner Bros. may face resistance even if the movie eventually reaches theaters.

Another Major Project Receives an Update

Jackson also shared encouraging news about The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is much further along in production.

Directed by Andy Serkis, the upcoming movie explores another chapter of Middle-earth’s history, focusing on the character Serkis famously portrayed in Jackson’s original trilogy.

During his appearance at the Sitges Film Festival, Jackson revealed that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum was nearing the end of filming, with approximately two weeks of shooting remaining. If things panned out as Jackson expected, production could wrap up soon, although an official completion date has not been confirmed.

Warner Bros. currently plans to release the movie on December 17, 2027.

Jackson also confirmed that the screenplay for a second Tintin movie has been completed and that he intends to direct that project next.

Unlike Shadow of the Past, which remains in early development, The Hunt for Gollum has a confirmed theatrical release date and is nearing the end of principal photography.

    What Happens Next for Middle-earth?

For now, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past remains alive despite reports suggesting otherwise.

Jackson’s latest comments confirm that development continues, although Warner Bros. hasn’t announced when filming will begin or when the movie could reach theaters.

The bigger challenge may involve convincing audiences that another story connected to the original trilogy deserves to be told.

With some fans already questioning the premise, the filmmakers face considerable expectations.

Ultimately, Jackson has addressed the rumors of cancellation, but whether Shadow of the Past can justify another return to Middle-earth remains an entirely different question.
